Asian American Women in Food: Writing and Media

Food media has taken on a life of its own in the past decade. What is it like to navigate this system of editing, reporting, and contributing to food culture as an Asian American woman?

Chef and writer Caroline Choe sits down with five food media figures in the editorial and media landscape — Cathy Erway, Emi Boscamp, Genevieve Yam, Liza DeGuia, and Pooja Makhijani — to discuss their work experiences and the best ways to help audiences stay informed about diverse food cultures in the face of the Trump administration’s efforts.

CAROLINE CHOE is a chef, artist, teacher, and writer based in New York City, and is a proud daughter of Korean American immigrants. She is the creator of “The Exploratorians” illustration series, the founder of Create & Plate, a business devoted to helping create community through arts and food education, and the author of Banchan: 60 Korean American Recipes for Delicious, Shareable Sides. After a long career of classroom teaching, she truly believes that practicing the act of creating — whether through art, music, dance, writing, food, and much more, is what will connect people across all differences and timelines. Caroline and her work have been featured in Food & Wine, NPR, Food52, Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, Eater, Cherry Bombe Magazine, Glamour, and NBC's Today Show.

 

CATHY ERWAY is a James Beard Award and IACP Award-winning food writer and the author of the cookbooks The Food of Taiwan and Sheet Pan Chicken. She began a food blog on home cooking in 2006 called “Not Eating Out in New York,” and wrote the memoir The Art of Eating In. Cathy has hosted a podcast at Heritage Radio Network and the IACP Award-winning podcast “Why We Eat What We Eat.” She writes the column "Shelve It" at TASTE, which explores foods in the grocery store.

 

LIZA MOSQUITO deGUIA is a James Beard Award-winning, 3x Emmy-nominated, and 5x James Beard-nominated food documentarian who loves food as much as she loves telling a great story. As the creator of food. curated., she champions passionate chefs and food makers through intimate, character-driven documentary shorts that air on local television. A proud Filipino-American, Liza focuses on the people and magic behind inspiring culinary ideas popping-up around the Tri-State, masterfully crafting narratives that build deep emotional connections—showing viewers that food isn’t just a meal, but a story worth savoring.

 

POOJA MAKHIJANI is the author of Mama’s Saris, Bread is Love, and Asha Means Hope. She is also the editor of Under Her Skin: How Girls Experience Race in America. Her bylines have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, Real Simple, The Atlantic, WSJ.com, The Cut, Teen Vogue, Epicurious, Publishers Weekly, ELLE, Bon Appétit, The Kitchn, BuzzFeed, and Catapult among others.

 

EMI BOSCAMP is the senior food editor at TODAY.com and co-author of the "TODAY Loves Food" cookbook. She lives in New York City, where she loves to cook with her husband Aidan and dog Koji. She was born without a sweet tooth, but in its place she has an umami tooth (anchovies are her favorite food). Emi has written and edited many stories, as well as produced original videos for TODAY.com, covering a wide range of topics, from a restaurant trying to preserve Manhattan's Chinatown to a Black farmer fighting to end racism in our food system.

 

GENEVIEVE YAM is a writer and editor based in New York. After graduating with a degree in politics and a brief, unsatisfying stint in the start-up world, she enrolled in the International Culinary Center in New York City and cooked at Blue Hill at Stone Barns and Per Se. She is currently a senior editor at Serious Eats, where she writes, edits, and develops recipes. Although Toronto, Hong Kong, and Scotland are all places she’s called home, she currently lives with her husband and two cats just north of Manhattan in Westchester County, NY.
