Make Your Own Quilt Block

For MOFAD’s Legacy Quilt Project

Start by gathering these everyday materials:

  • Paper and/or old magazines

  • Scissors

  • Glue or glue sticks

  • Rulers

  • Crayons, markers, paints or colored pencils

Idea #1: Geometric Quilt Block

  1. Print out or copy one of the designs below onto a plain, square sheet of paper. Cut colorful paper into the shapes you see on the design and glue them in to the design. (Leave some of the shapes blank if you want to draw or write in them later.)

  2. Write, draw, or glue photos and magazine pictures that represent your African American Culinary Hero into some of the shapes on your decorated quilt block.

Idea #2: Crazy Quilt Block

  1. Cut out shapes from any kind of scrap paper you have around, such as construction paper, computer paper, or magazine pages.

  2. Make a plain paper backing for your quilt block any size you want.

  3. Make a collage on top of the paper backing by gluing your cutouts and even photos of your African American Culinary Hero as part of your crazy quilt collage.

  4. Draw in stitch marks if you want to.

Idea #3: Lincoln Log Quilt Block

  1. Use the template below to look at as you create your quilt block. If you want to make yours smaller than the one shown, read the instructions next to the template.

  2. Start by creating a sturdy paper backing for your quilt block in the size you’ve chosen. (This block needs to be a square so be sure all four sides are the same length.) Use your ruler and a pencil to measure and draw an outline for the backing. When you are finished, cut it out.

  3. Find the center of your backing square using your ruler. Make a dot where the center of the block is located. This is where you will glue the center square to the backing.

  4. Use your ruler and pencil again to measure a 4 x 4 inch square on a separate piece of paper. This will be your center square.

  5. Find the center of the center square and draw a dot just like you did for the backing square.

  6. Cut out the center square and glue it to the exact center of your backing by lining up the dots on both squares. The center of the backing square and the center square should be lined up exactly.

  7. Use your ruler and pencil again to measure and draw outlines for each strip of paper you need to complete your Lincoln Log Quilt Block. The length measurements are shown on the template. Can you figure out how wide each strip should be? [Hint: All the strips will have the same width.] The width of the center square (4 inches) plus the width of each strip from top to bottom should equal 16 inches.

  8. Starting with the shortest strips, cut out and glue all the strips as shown in the template.

  9. Glue a photograph, magazine cutout, or drawing into the center square that represents your African American culinary hero.

To make your quilt block smaller than the template to the left, omit the four outer edge strips (16”, 15”, 14” 13”) and just make the strips that measure 1” through 12”. Keep omitting the outer edge strips to make an 8” or 4” block.

Thank you for making your original quilt block.
